DebtData publishes statistical and research content designed to make U.S. debt data easier to evaluate. Editorial decisions are based on source quality, measurement clarity, public usefulness, and whether the available evidence supports a distinct research question.

Evidence Before Narrative

Numbers are not selected to support a predetermined conclusion. The source, population, period, and definition are established before the surrounding explanation is written. When the available evidence does not answer a question directly, the limitation is stated rather than filled with speculation.

Primary Sources

Original government datasets and official statistical releases are preferred whenever they directly cover the subject. Secondary publications may be used to identify a source or research lead, but a widely repeated statistic is not treated as verified merely because it appears on multiple websites.

Current Data

For current-statistics reports, DebtData uses the most recent appropriate dataset available at the time of research. The newest publication is not automatically the best source if it measures a different population or changes the definition required for the report.

Historical Comparability

A longer series is not always a better series. Historical tables are extended only when the observations are reasonably comparable. Methodology changes, missing years, breaks in coverage, or altered population definitions are disclosed when they affect interpretation.

Calculations

DebtData may calculate ratios, averages, shares, rankings, percentage changes, and similar measures from compatible source values. Calculated figures are not presented as agency-published statistics when they were derived by DebtData. Rounded inputs produce appropriately rounded outputs.

Neutrality

DebtData does not write research pages to advocate for a political party, lender, servicer, school, repayment plan, debt-relief company, or financial product. Policy changes can be described when they affect the data, but reporting separates measurable effects from political argument.

Financial Advice

DebtData provides general statistical information. Reports do not recommend that a reader borrow, refinance, consolidate, invest, select a repayment plan, pursue forgiveness, or make another individualized financial decision.

Advertising and Commercial Influence

Advertising, sponsorship, referral relationships, or other commercial arrangements, if present, do not determine source selection, reported values, rankings, or corrections. Editorial content is not altered to make a sponsor’s product or service appear more favorable.

Authorship and Accountability

Pages are published under the site’s editorial responsibility. Research content is expected to be traceable to listed sources and reproducible where calculations are used. Material errors are corrected when identified.

Content Updates

A report can be revised because a new dataset becomes available, a source revises earlier data, a definition changes, an error is found, or additional context materially improves interpretation. Cosmetic edits do not change the underlying data period.

What Is Not Published

DebtData does not knowingly publish fabricated statistics, invented source dates, unsupported causal claims, fake quotations, fictional personal experiences, or numbers that cannot be tied to a credible source.
