In the March 31, 2026 Federal Student Aid debt-size snapshot, 44.8 million federal student loan borrowers were distributed across nine outstanding-balance ranges holding about $1.6963 trillion. The largest borrower group was the $20,000 to $40,000 range, with 9.5 million borrowers. Debt dollars were much more concentrated at the upper end: borrowers owing $100,000 or more represented about 8.5% of borrowers in the debt-size table but held about 41.9% of the reported balance.
Federal Student Loan Debt by Balance Size
Federal Student Aid groups borrowers by their outstanding federal student loan balance. The March 2026 table shows a wide gap between the number of borrowers in each range and the share of debt dollars held by that group.

Where Federal Student Loan Debt Is Concentrated
Borrower Share vs. Debt Share by Outstanding Balance
Percentage of borrowers and percentage of outstanding debt represented by each federal borrower balance range, March 31, 2026.
Federal Student Aid, Portfolio by Debt Size, March 31, 2026. Percentage shares are DebtData calculations from rounded source values.
Most borrowers are below $40,000, while debt dollars tilt toward larger balances
- About 52.0% of borrowers in the table owed less than $20,000, yet those borrowers accounted for about 12.0% of the reported outstanding balance.
- About 73.2% owed less than $40,000. Their combined balance was $474.7 billion, about 28.0% of the debt represented in the table.
- Borrowers owing at least $100,000 represented about 8.5% of borrowers but held $710.1 billion, or about 41.9% of reported debt.
- The $200,000-or-more group contained 1.2 million borrowers but held $355.8 billion, slightly more debt than the $100,000-to-$200,000 group.
High-Balance Borrowers Hold a Disproportionate Share of Debt
The difference between borrower share and debt share becomes widest in the highest balance ranges. Borrowers with $100,000 to $200,000 represented about 5.8% of borrowers but 20.9% of outstanding dollars. Borrowers with at least $200,000 represented about 2.7% of borrowers and 21.0% of outstanding dollars.
Combined, those two groups contained 3.8 million borrowers and $710.1 billion in outstanding federal student loan debt. By comparison, the 23.3 million borrowers owing less than $20,000 held $203.9 billion.
The debt-size distribution describes outstanding federal loan balances. It does not measure debt at graduation, annual borrowing, monthly payments, private student loans, or the amount originally borrowed.
The $20,000 to $40,000 Range Has the Most Borrowers
The $20,000-to-$40,000 range contained 9.5 million borrowers, more than any other single category. Those borrowers held $270.8 billion, equal to about 16.0% of the balance represented in the debt-size table.
The next-largest borrower group was the $10,000-to-$20,000 range at 9.2 million. Together, borrowers owing from $10,000 through $40,000 numbered 18.7 million and held $403.3 billion.
Nearly One-Third of Borrowers Owe Less Than $10,000
The two lowest debt ranges contained 14.1 million borrowers. That equals about 31.5% of borrowers in the table. Their combined outstanding balance was $71.4 billion, or about 4.2% of the reported debt.
This distribution means borrower counts alone do not show where most federal student loan dollars are located. Lower-balance groups contain millions of borrowers, while a much smaller population of high-balance borrowers accounts for a large portion of outstanding dollars.
Data Notes
- The table uses the Federal Student Aid Portfolio by Debt Size reporting structure for March 31, 2026, the second quarter of federal fiscal year 2026.
- Federal Student Aid’s debt-size report measures outstanding principal and interest on federal student loans and groups borrowers by their outstanding balance.
- The balance ranges cover federal loans reported in the FSA portfolio. Private student loans are outside this dataset.
- The 44.8 million figure is the borrower count within the debt-size report. It should not be substituted for a separately reported FSA recipient count because borrower and recipient measures can have different reporting populations.
- Borrower counts are reported in millions and balances in billions of dollars. Because the published category values are rounded, calculations based on them are approximate.
- Borrower-share percentages were calculated by dividing each rounded category borrower count by 44.8 million. Debt-share percentages were calculated by dividing each rounded category balance by $1,696.3 billion.
- Rounded debt-share percentages total about 100.1% rather than exactly 100%.
- Federal Student Aid announced on September 22, 2026 that its broader quarterly Data Center reports had been refreshed through June 30, 2026. The category values on this page remain a March 31, 2026 debt-size snapshot and are not combined with June portfolio totals.
